Not just Food and Drink

At York we pride ourselves in providing freshly prepared local produce regardless of whether you are eating in one of our self service restaurants or enjoying sumptuous corporate hospitality.

There is a pride taken in the use of local suppliers; we buy beef from local farms for example, Low Common Farm, Sheffield; turkey from Milford Farm, South Milford; smoked trout and salmon from Bleikers of Harrogate; carrots and parsnips from Poskitt’s of Goole; asparagus from Morrit Farm, Thirsk; salad leaf from Harrogate and rhubarb from Pudsey. Our cheese is from Ryedale, Wensleydale and Hambleton and the herbs we use to flavour some of our dishes come from Sand Hutton, all within the seasonal calendar.

Attention to detail doesn’t stop there. We make our sandwiches actually at the Racecourse from fresh and mainly local ingredients with bread from Beverley Bakery and, for example, eggs from Market Weighton. The packaging we use is biodegradable.

Our beer is supplied by John Smith’s of Tadcaster and the Theakston Bar, is dedicated to serving hand pulled Theakston Best, the pride of Masham. As the Yorkshire climate encourages great tasting brews; our wine, whilst clearly not produced locally, is in large part supplied by Townends of Hull with whom we have a longstanding relationship. We spend the first quarter of each year working with them to select a unique wine list that we believe is both interesting and good value. If a cold lager is your preference on a hot summer’s day then we have installed “super – chilled” at all the permanent bars.

Dealing with relatively small local suppliers means we have more personal relationships, a greater control on quality and use less ‘food miles’ in getting our produce here. When it gets here our fine brigade of chefs, most of whom have considerable service with us, seek to produce memorable dishes under the direction of our Executive Chef, Andrew and our Head Chef, Stefan who have, in their 20+ years at York Racecourse, made a huge contribution to a reputation for fine food, that made the racecourse a grand Finalist in the “Best Eating Place” category at the recent York Hospitality Awards.

Whatever your tastes and whether you want a snack or 3-course meal or a banquet we aim to have something to suit your palate and your pocket. Have a great day’s racing!
