Getting Here

Planning your journey to York Racecourse is easy, with a range of transport options available to suit your needs. Whether you're arriving by car, train, or on foot, it's important to check the latest travel updates before you set off. We recommend consulting official online sources for the most accurate and up-to-date information to help ensure a smooth and stress-free journey on race day.

National Highways

A1 – Darrington & Wentbridge

Ongoing works (now in their third year) to repair the Wentbridge viaduct and Went Edge Road bridge.  Expected to be complete late August 2025

Barrier Upgrades between Parlington (M1 Garforth) and Grange Moor (A1M Boston Spa)

Commencing overnight from Thursday 15 May. Lane closures on north and southbound approaches - delays expected. The scheme is expected to last until May 2026.

York Gateway Project

Weekend and overnight closures of roads (next planned from 7pm on 24/5 until 6am on 27/5.)  Temporary traffic lights in operation at various times. The scope of the works changes frequently so monitor information from City of York Council.  We have liaised closely with them and they have planned the most disruptive work to avoid racedays.

York Station long stay car park is now permanently closed to allow for the construction of a multi storey car park.

The scheme is expected to be complete in late 2025.

Northern Rail

There will be disruption on some racedays to Northern Trains between York and Leeds.  Buses will replace trains on the route via Garforth on the following dates.  It will however be possible to get trains from Leeds to York (and return) via Harrogate or via Castleford.  Whilst rail travel will be still possible it is likely to result in some reduced capacity and extended journey times for rail travellers.  I have discussed this with Chris, and we have agreed to provide Northern Rail with postcode data for our sales to help them predict and provide for the demand.

The following racedays will be directly affected by this:

  1. June 14th – Macmillan Charity Day.  (Friday not affected.) Also Leeds Rhino’s playing Warrington at Headingley (1730) Will increase demand for trains via Harrogate which stop at Headingley.
  2. June 28th – Summer Music Saturday
  3. Sept 7th – York Mix Family Sunday (Also Women’s Rugby World Cup – Japan v Spain attended by 8000 at LNER Stadium)

The following racedays will be affected to a lesser extent:

  1. During the Dante Festival (Wednesday & Thursday) there will be late night replacement buses (after 10pm.)
  2. In October (Friday & Sat) there will be some disruption further away from York with a replacement bus service between Halifax and Leeds.  Direct trains from Leeds to York will be available.

Other routes, including the West Coast Main Line, Cross Country are not affected (to the best of my knowledge.)

Shuttle buses leave from the station to the racecourse.  The service starts at 1100 and run until around the time of the first race.  The return bus service (from gate 1) commences at around 4:30pm ands runs until around 6:30pm or later according to demand.  The fare is £4 return or £2.50 single and is payable when boarding the bus.

The Hackney Carriage rank is on Campleshon Road.  Private Hire, including Ubers etc pick up, and drop off in Car Park A.  We have requested that the Uber Geofence is in place between 1100 and 1900 which means Ubers can only pick up and drop off in the designated area.  The app will guide passengers to Car Park A.

Pedestrians can walk to and from the city centre in around 20 minutes.  When returning to the city please use the toilet facilities before you leave.   Toilets are also provided on the Little Knavesmire.  Please respect our neighbours by following the designated walking route and using the facilities provided.  North Yorkshire Police are on hand to support local residents and assist racegoers.

Please note always check online sources for up-to-date information before travelling.
