BRITAIN'S BIGGEST CHARITY RACEDAY REACHES £11 MILLION RAISED

The successful staging of the 54th Macmillan Charity Raceday saw the cumulative total raised from the day exceed £11 million.

The day itself added £400,000 to reach that new total, a tribute to the hard work and support of so many people; those who engaged with the auction, the intrepid charity riders and their supporters, box holders, race sponsors and the nearly 15,000 racegoers. Every year York Racecourse makes a significant contribution to the good causes from the revenue raised on the day.

At the start of the day the aptly named Lester Lloyd joined the roll of honour for the Macmillan Ride of Their Lives; after a competitive contest, he held off eight rivals aboard Hartswood. Trainer Richard Fahey and the owners typified the support shown by the wider racing community for this challenge. Though the smiles and pictures will provide the memories of the race, the cumulative fundraising of over £110,000 will be its true legacy.

In the wider action, the richest prize of the afternoon went to connections of Hucklesbrook as North Yorkshire rider Jo Mason stretched out the three-year-old in the £125,000 Churchill Tyres Macmillan Sprint.

Based in Leyburn with Karl Burke, Al Qareem would not have far to travel were his owners to take up the golden ticket for the Sky Bet Ebor, that victory in the Sky Bet Grand Cup secured.

The donation pages for the riders and the wider day remain open and can accessed through the website of York Racecourse.

The reigning Racecourse of the Year will next be in action on Saturday 28 June when the dual attractions will be the Group Three Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Criterion Stakes and a live concert by Olly Murs.
