York Racecourse is proud to announce that Chief Executive & Clerk of the Course, William Derby will be supporting the racing industry in a truly meaningful way this summer, by taking on the Castle to Abbey Challenge in aid of Racing Welfare.
Taking place on Sunday 6th July 2025, the challenge is a 22-mile guided trek along the picturesque Cleveland Way, from Scarborough Castle to Whitby Abbey. The undulating coastal path cuts through the stunning North York Moors National Park and features an ascent equivalent to climbing Snowdon, making it a serious test of stamina and determination. The walk is expected to take between 10 to 12 hours to complete.
By undertaking the Castle to Abbey Challenge, William is raising crucial funds and awareness for Racing Welfare, the registered charity dedicated to supporting the workforce of British horseracing. From stud and stable staff to those who work on racecourses and in associated roles, Racing Welfare plays a vital part in the lives of the people who power the sport – offering professional guidance and practical help across areas such as mental and physical health, addiction, housing, career development, and financial wellbeing.
York Racecourse encourages colleagues, racing fans, and the wider community to get behind William’s fundraising effort and support Racing Welfare’s invaluable work.
