After the disappointment of last Saturday's Ascot card being lost to the ravages of Storm Alex, racing has come together to reschedule the feature contests.
In these times, even more than ever, racing needs to work together so it is a tribute to the BHA race planning team, the courses involved, the race sponsors and now the Horsemen to see these Pattern contests rescued.
In the case of York Racecourse, an additional eighth race has been added to each of Friday 9th and Saturday 10th October.
To be run at 1.35pm on Friday, the Betsafe Cumberland Lodge Stakes is a Group 3 over the mile and a quarter trip, so it is fitting that course and distance winner,Logician, has been entered. The striking grey colt who carries the green, pink & white silks of Prince Khalid Abdullah was last seen on the Knavesmire when landing the Group 2 Sky Bet Great Volitgeur, three weeks prior to beoming the fourteenth colt to do the Knavesmire/Town Moor double, when scoring in the St Leger of 2019. Troubled by injury this season, the John Gosden trained star will not be without challengers for the boosted £48,000 prize. As an indication, amongst a quality four strong field at declarations stage is Euchen Glen, winner of the 59th John Smith's Cup, representing the Scottish yard of Jim Goldie, so is another with course and distance form.
Opening the Saturday card at the earlier time of 1pm will be the Group 3 Coral Bengough Stakes offering £45,000 to six furlong sprinters. Highest rated amongst the fourteen entries is course and distance winner, Dakota Gold, who took the Listed Garrowby Stakes in 2019 for Michael Dods. Though plenty are regular performers on the Knavesmire, none more so than locally trained Brando who has nine spins over the Knavesmire turf amongst his forty-one starts; three times second placed, will the Kevin Ryan stalwart take the final step up on Saturday? Traditionally at his best in the Autumn when he bagged a pair of Group 1 wins, The Tin Man will be hoping to rekindle past glories for James Fanshawe. This race is live on Racing TV with highlights likely to form part of the live ITV1 coverage, slightly later in the afternoon.
These new races join what were already valuable cards at York, with a £75,000 contest the handicap feature of each day. Saturday may also highlight a promising juvenile in the Listed Coral Rockingham Stakes.
