York Racecourse

Boost to October Prize Money

York Racecourse is delighted to announce that, following a successful season to date, a bonus boost of £50,000 will be added to the published prize money kitty for Coral Sprint Trophy day on Saturday 9th October, the final day of the York season. This will mean a record sum of over £175,000 for this finale occasion.

The boost is consistent with the philosophy that underpins racing at York; to invest in prize money, facilities and the experience of going racing on the Knavesmire.

Total prize money for the season at York will finish in excess of £5,000,000 having risen by over £100,000 to a new record level.

Chairman of York Racecourse, Nicholas Wrigley, said, “This is what we are all about at York; when we are able to invest in the race programme then that is what we do.  Despite the pressure on levy funds, we have received great support from owners, sponsors and racegoers this year so our natural inclination is to put money back in to the sport.  Across the year we have been able to deliver record prize money and we remain grateful for the support we have received that allows us to make this investment.”

The injection of cash into the Coral Sprint Trophy will make this famous sprint the joint richest race on the day, now worth £75,000.

William Derby, Chief Executive and Clerk of the Course, said, “This year the Coral Sprint Trophy will be run at a record level, more than twice the prize fund that was offered as recently as 2007.  In addition the Listed Coral Rockingham Stakes will receive a 30% boost with a new prize fund of £40,000. As we head towards our final two days of the year we are 12% ahead on attendances compared to last year, meaning that over 327,000 people have already experienced racing on the Knavesmire in 2010. ”

Last year the race was won by Kaldoun Kingdom trained in Malton by Richard Fahey who said, “It is always great to have a winner at York, it is a track that remembers what it is all about. I hope we can find one to take advantage of the increased money.”

Paul Dixon, President of the Racehorse Owners Association and Chairman of the Horsemen’s Group, said, “We applaud this prize-money boost from York, which is an ROA Gold Standard racecourse. It is a fantastic initiative on top of their already record level of prize money and the improvements to the Owners and Trainers’ facilities. It will be welcomed by owners and horsemen and I’d encourage other courses to follow their example.  I hope York are rewarded by a fantastic final raceday to top off what has already been a great season.”

Speaking on behalf of the main sponsors of the day, Trading and PR Director at Coral, Simon Clare said; “We value our partnership with York and are pleased to be part of a record breaking end to a successful season.”
