Saunders travels in hope with Captain Carey
TRAINER Malcolm Saunders is all set to make the long journey from Somerset to York with his hat-trick seeking sprinter Captain Carey.
The four-year-old gelding has already notched up wins at Wolves and Chepstow this season and has been declared for this Friday’s sportingbet.com World Cup Daily Offers handicap on the Knavesmire.
In-form Saunders has a proven record with speedsters, recording multiple Group and Listed wins in the past with both Indian Maiden and Reportory.
Now he is hoping that Captain Carey can continue his upward spiral over the Knavesmire’s fast five furlongs when he lines up against 13 others to compete in this ultra competitive sprint handicap
Saunders said: “I’ve had a couple of really good sprinters and I think Captain Carey could be a nice horse.
“I’m looking forward to bringing him to York – we’ll travel up on Thursday as, if you get a bit of a hold up, it can take six hours – and we feel the track will be right for him. He is better with some cut in the ground and we should get that. He has gone up 4lb in the handicap (for his Chepstow win on May 21) which will not help but he seems to be in good form this year. We’ve always thought a lot of him as he is a big strong horse and a really nice ride.”
Saunders has his string in excellent form. In the past four days he has been in the winner’s enclosure with Kingsdine and Avrilo – his last two runners.
He added: “All my horses seem to be running well which is nice.”
York’s two-day meeting commences on Friday with a six-race card that gets underway at 2.20pm.Saturday sees the 40th running of Macmillan Charity Day with over £200,000 on offer through the seven race card.
