York operations manager becomes first to gain top NVQ award
York Racecourse is delighted to announce that Tony Lee, Operations Manager at York, became the first from the world of racecourse management to gained his NVQ Level Four Award in Spectator Safety Management. This is the highest NVQ level available and involves detailed and intensive study of all aspects of modern spectator management and a year of detailed study, culminating in a final assessment and a written case study.
In a ceremony at the John Smith’s Cup meeting, which also included 58 members of the York raceday staff team receiving their NVQ Level Two certificates in Customer Care and Safety Management, William Derby presented Tony with his certificate in the York Winners Enclosure. He said: “Tony is one of the senior team at York and leads the raceday team in delivering what we endeavour to make a first class experience for those racegoers. He and his team have worked long and hard on this formal training programme to continue to add to their skills and talents. For Tony to be the first racecourse manager to graduate through this world class programme is a tribute to him and his team and I am very proud of them.”
The programme uses the expertise of Telford College and Terry Anslow from the College commented; “This is a rigorous and nationally accredited qualification which has been carefully designed to incorporate best practise from all sport and is a world leading programme. In our experience across the industry and sport generally, Tony leads a first class operation at York and for him to be the first person from the racecourse world to reach this high level of achievement is a tribute to both him and the support offered by York Racecourse.”.
Tony Lee, said; “Although the course was long, detailed and at times intense , I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of going “back to school” and very much look forward to working with the rest of the team at York in continuing to deliver enjoyable and successful racedays.
As a case in point York successfully welcomed its second highest ever crowd for a York fixture with over 41,500 attending the 51st John Smith’s Cup. The newly qualified team now looks forward to its Music Showcase Weekend that starts on Friday evening July 23rd when Madness will provide the entertainment followed by the Stars from X Factor on Saturday 24th July.
