York Racecourse employs only around 50 full time permanent positions across its main departments of: ground management, buildings management, customer services, non-raceday activities, marketing and finance as well as a small number of permanent positions.

Head Gardener Vacancy
York Racecourse is one of the leading flat racecourses in Europe with a 17 day race programme from May to October attracting some of the best horses in the world to race on the Knavesmire. As well as being known for its award winning facilities, record crowds and host of events outside racing, the course is famous for its extensive floral displays which in 2011 secured a Gold Rose Award in Yorkshire in Bloom.
Following recent retirement of the much respected and admired Ian Halstead, we are recruiting for a Head Gardener to report to the Head Groundsman. He/she will lead in the delivery of floral displays on York racedays, nurturing plants from seed and seedling and being responsible for all aspects of floriculture at the Racecourse.
You will be responsible for:
- Planning and delivering floral schemes throughout the site in consultation with the Head Groundsman.
- Establishing plants and flowers from seedlings at our own greenhouses through to planting out in beds, borders and hanging baskets, and maintaining to a very high standard in public areas across the site.
- Running the unit efficiently and effectively including ordering of materials and seedlings, organising and leading staff and managing irrigation and watering programmes.
- You will be an integrated member of the wider racecourse team assisting with wider raceday and event duties including the requirement for seasonal and weekend working.
The successful applicant will have extensive professional gardening and grounds experience and an appreciation for the high standards expected by York Racecourse and our customers. A high level of horticultural expertise, knowledge of flowers, eye for detail and organisational skills are essential for the role along with drive, initiative and enthusiasm. A full, clean UK driving licence is required. NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in amenity landscaping is desirable although those candidates with extensive experience in similar roles will also be considered.
